Fencing Melbourne

Fencing and gates across Melbourne and regional Victoria

Colorbond, timber, mesh and farm fences, plus gates: our fencing contractors install the lot across Melbourne. They also install sleeper retaining walls, made from long timber or concrete beams that hold back soil.

We repair existing fences too, on homes, farms and commercial sites.

Time for a new fence?

Signs it's time to replace your fence

If your fence has any of these, tell us what you're seeing. We'll quote the repair or a new fence.

  1. Leaning or sagging sections

A lean usually means a post has rotted or come loose at the base. A dip in the middle usually means a rail has sagged. Strong wind makes both worse.

  2. Rot or rust

Timber rots where it meets the ground, and steel rusts where it's scratched. Once it spreads, a patch won't hold.

  3. Broken palings, panels or rails

Split or missing palings leave gaps the dog can get out through. A cracked rail can't hold the palings up, and a bent steel panel won't straighten out properly.

  4. Loose posts

If a post moves when you push it, the base has gone. A few loose posts and the whole line starts to lean.

  5. Repairs keep adding up

If you're fixing the same fence every year, a new one can cost less in the long run.

  6. Less privacy or security

If people can see into your yard or step over the fence, it's too low or has too many gaps. A taller, solid fence blocks the view.

Boundary fences

Sharing a fence with your neighbour

Replacing a fence on the boundary? In Victoria, the Fences Act 1968 sets out who pays and what to do if you and your neighbour can't agree.

  1. The cost is usually split

In Victoria, neighbours are equally responsible for the dividing fence, so the cost is usually shared.

  2. Want something fancier?

If one neighbour wants a more expensive fence, they usually pay the extra.

  3. Use a fencing notice

If you can't agree, you can give your neighbour a fencing notice. That's a written request to share the cost.

  4. Check with your council

Most side and back fences up to 2 metres don't need a permit. Front fences, corner blocks and heritage areas can. Rules vary by council.

You can show your neighbour our written quote when you talk about splitting the cost.

Questions

Fencing questions we get asked

It depends on the length, height, material, the ground and how many gates you need. Send us your suburb and the rough metres for a free written quote.

Not always. Often the details in the quote form are enough. Some jobs need a measure up first, and we'll tell you if yours does.

They cost about the same to install. Colorbond needs almost no upkeep and gives full privacy. Timber needs staining or painting every few years. So it comes down to the look you like and how much upkeep you're happy with.

Both. If only a few posts or palings have gone, a repair is usually the cheaper fix.

Yes. We cover Melbourne and regional Victoria, including farms and rural blocks. For bigger jobs, we'll travel further.
